...This movement began with F. Marinetti's Futurist Manifesto (1909). Then Boccioni, Severini, and Giacomo Balla (1871-1958) published the Futurist Manifesto in Milan in 1910. With Marinetti as their leader, they broke with all the old rules of art and culture and praised the dynamism of machines and speed in the new, futuristic society. Many young Italian artists of the time agreed with this and continued to publish manifestos with the aim of destroying the academicism of the past. ...
