Year of death: 7/30/1502 (9/1/1502) Year of birth: 1421 A Renga master from the Muromachi period. His pen names include Jinensai and Tanegyokuan. There are two theories about his birthplace: Kii Province and Omi Province, and there is no definite proof that he was born under the surname Iio. After turning 30, he decided to pursue Renga, and studied under Takayama Soseki, and later Shinkei and Senjun. In 1466, at the age of 46, he went to Kanto, and for the next seven years he spent mainly in Kanto, writing Renga treatises such as "Chorokubun" and "Azuma Mondo," traveling to Shirakawa, participating in a troupe study of "Kawagoe Senku," taking a class on the secrets of the Kokinshu from Azuma Tsuneyuki, and reciting "Mishima Senku" by himself, all of which were energetic activities that built the foundation for his later leaps. After returning to Kyoto in 1472, he built Tanegyokuan, and had no time to rest from waka and Renga meetings and classical lectures, presenting a collection of haiku to Emperor Go-Tsuchimikado in 1477 and 1478. His fame grew when he attended the first Renga gathering of the Muromachi Shogunate in January 1485 for the first time, and in 1488 he was appointed as the magistrate of the Kitano Renga Kaisho, the highest honorary position in the Renga world at the time, becoming the leading figure in the field in both name and reality. In 1495, at the age of 75, he presented the quasi-imperial "Shinsen [G7EDFKunami/Tsukuba]shu," and in the same year he traveled to Echigo, spending two New Years there before traveling to Suruga accompanied by Socho, but he died on the way at an inn in Hakone Yumoto. His haiku collections include "Kayagusa", "Royo", and "Shimokusa", his theory on renga includes the above-mentioned works as well as "Sougi Hakku Hanshi", "Roi no Susami", and "Sougi Shoshin Sho", his classical studies include "The Tale of Genji Fushin Shoshu", "The Tale of Ise Yamaguchiki", and "Self-praise Notes", and his travelogues include "Shirakawa Kiko" and "Chikushi Doki". He spent much of his later life traveling, especially on trips to Echigo seven times, and also made his way to Kanto and Kyushu, spreading Kyoto culture to samurai in various regions. He was a hard-working man who devoted his life to renga and classical studies, and even on his deathbed he was pondering the verse "Looking at the moon, I stand there" and muttering, "I cannot add it, everyone else should add it," showing his dedication to renga until the very end. 没年:文亀2.7.30(1502.9.1) 生年:応永28(1421) 室町時代の連歌師。号は自然斎,種玉庵など。誕生地は紀伊国,近江国両説があり,飯尾姓についても確証はない。30歳を過ぎてから連歌に志し,高山宗砌,のち心敬,専順に師事した。文正1(1466)年,46歳で関東下向,以後7年間おもに関東にあって,連歌論『長六文』『吾妻問答』の述作,白河への旅行,『河越千句』への一座,東常縁より古今集秘説の受講,『三島千句』の独吟など精力的に活動し後年の飛躍の基礎を築いた。文明4(1472)年帰京の後種玉庵を建て,和歌,連歌の会や古典講義に休む暇もなく同7,8年には後土御門天皇に句集を進覧。また8年1月には室町幕府の連歌会始めに初めて出仕するなど,名声があがり,長享2(1488)年には当時の連歌界で最高の名誉職である北野連歌会所奉行に任じられて名実ともに斯界の第一人者となった。明応4(1495)年,75歳のとき准勅撰の『新撰【G7EDF玖波/つくば】集』を奏覧,同9年越後へ下向,2度の正月を同地で過ごしたあと,宗長に伴われて駿河へ向かったが,途中箱根湯本の旅宿で没した。 句集に『萱草』『老葉』『下草』,連歌論に前記のもののほか『宗祇発句判詞』『老のすさみ』『宗祇初心抄』などがあり,古典研究に『源氏物語不審抄出』『伊勢物語山口記』『自讃歌注』,紀行に『白河紀行』『筑紫道記』などがある。その後半生は特に旅に過ごすことが多く,7度の越後下向をはじめ,関東,九州にも足跡はおよび,各地の武士に京の文化を伝えた。生涯,連歌と古典研究に精進した刻苦勉励の人で,臨終の床でも「ながむる月に立ちぞうかるる」の句を沈吟し,「我は付けがたし,皆々付け侍れ」とうわ言をいうなど,最後まで連歌に執念を燃やした。三条西実隆とは特に親しく,門弟には肖柏,宗長,宗碩らがいる。<参考文献>伊地知鉄男『宗祇』,金子金治郎『宗祇の生活と作品』,島津忠夫『連歌師宗祇』 (沢井耐三) 出典 朝日日本歴史人物事典:(株)朝日新聞出版朝日日本歴史人物事典について 情報 |
