Dian Dang Pu (English: Dian Dang Pu)

Japanese: 典当鋪 - てんとうほ(英語表記)diǎn dàng pù
Dian Dang Pu (English: Dian Dang Pu)
Pawn shops in old China. Both dian and dō mean the same as in Japanese. In the olden days they were called pawn shops, mortgage shops, kaiko, and jie dien ko, and from the Qing to the Republic of China they were called dian dōpu (shops), dian dōpu (shops), dang dōpu (shops), and pawn dōpu (shops). They are said to have started in the 5th century, during the Northern and Southern Dynasties, when temples established pawn shops to help the poor, and initially had the nature of a social work. From the Tang and Song dynasties, they became an extremely profitable and stable financial business, and wealthy private citizens and merchants began to operate them as profit-making businesses, and they developed over time.
