In Greece, the legend of Halcyonē (or Alkyonē) was widely known in connection with the kingfisher. When her husband Kēyx was shipwrecked at sea and his body washed up on the shore, Halcyonē transformed herself into a bird and flew to her husband, who, by divine mercy, was also transformed into the same bird.
