Nemuro Peninsula - Nemurohanto

A peninsula jutting out into the Pacific Ocean in eastern Hokkaido. It belongs to Nemuro City and is also called the Hanasaki Peninsula. Cape Nosappu at the tip of the peninsula faces the Habomai Islands across the Goyoumai Strait. It is 28 kilometers long, 4 to 8 kilometers wide, and 40 to 60 meters above sea level. It is formed of a flat, gently undulating plateau, and residual lakes such as Onne-numa, Chobushi-numa, and Nanbu-numa are distributed in the alluvial plains of the short river basins. The coastline is complex and varied, consisting of agglomerate and conglomerate. Numerous reefs, including Yururi Island and Moyururi Island, are distributed around the peninsula. Nemuro City and Port are located on the northern coast of the central part of the peninsula, and Hanasaki Port is located on the southern coast. These cities serve as bases for offshore and deep-sea fishing, and the coastal area is dotted with fishing villages for kelp, wakame, and sea urchin.

北海道東部、太平洋に突出する半島。根室市に属し、花咲半島(はなさきはんとう)ともいう。先端の納沙布(のさっぷ)岬は珸瑶瑁水道(ごようまいすいどう)を挟んで歯舞群島(はぼまいぐんとう)と対している。長さ28キロメートル、幅4～8キロメートル、標高40～60メートル。平坦(へいたん)で緩い波状性台地で形成され、短い河川流域の沖積地には温根沼(おんねとう)、長節沼(ちょうぶしとう)、南部沼(なんぶとう)などの残留性湖沼が分布する。海岸線は集塊岩、礫(れき)岩からなり、複雑で変化に富んでいる。半島の周囲はユルリ島、モユルリ島など数多くの岩礁が分布する。半島の中央部の北岸に根室市街と根室港、南岸に花咲港があり、沖合・遠洋漁業の基地となっているほか、沿岸一帯は、コンブ、ワカメ、ウニ漁の漁村が分布している。
