...19th century greenhouses were at the forefront of architectural technology, making full use of the new materials of the time, cast iron and glass, and were used in exposition venues (such as the Crystal Palace), train station roofs, the glass ceilings of department stores, and glass-covered arcades. The origin of greenhouses in Japan can be traced back to the andon-muro (a brazier placed in an oil-paper-covered pit) used in the late Edo period to promote the flowering of ornamental plants (there are remains of this type in the Koishikawa Botanical Garden attached to the University of Tokyo). The earliest example of a modern greenhouse is said to be one built in 1870 (Meiji 3) in the gardens of the Hokkaido Development Agency's headquarters in Aoyama, Tokyo. ...
