The origin of greenhouses in Japan can be traced back to the andon-muro (a brazier placed in an oil-paper-covered pit) used in the late Edo period to promote the flowering of ornamental plants (there are remains of this type in the Koishikawa Botanical Garden attached to the University of Tokyo).
