Henri Cartier‐Bresson

1908‐2004
French photographer. Born in Normandy. Initially, he aspired to be a painter, but was inspired by the photographs of Man Ray and Atget, and began to take up photography seriously around 1930. In 1932, he held his first solo exhibition in New York, but his snapshot-based photographs only received enthusiastic support from a small group of people. In 1936, he took the entrance exam for a newspaper company in Paris and failed, but it was at this time that he met Capa and David Seymour, which led to the founding of the international photo agency Magnum Photos (1947).

フランスの写真家。ノルマンディー地方に生まれる。初め画家を志すが，マン･レイやアッジェの写真に刺激されて，1930年ころから本格的に写真に取り組む。32年ニューヨークで初めての個展を開催。しかし，スナップ･ショットにもとづく彼の写真は一部の熱心な支持を受けただけであった。36年パリの新聞社の入社試験を受け不合格になるが，この時キャパ，シーモアDavid Seymourと出会い，国際的写真通信社〈マグナム･フォトスMagnum Photos〉設立(1947)のきっかけとなる。
