1908‐2004 French photographer. Born in Normandy. Initially, he aspired to be a painter, but was inspired by the photographs of Man Ray and Atget, and began to take up photography seriously around 1930. In 1932, he held his first solo exhibition in New York, but his snapshot-based photographs only received enthusiastic support from a small group of people. In 1936, he took the entrance exam for a newspaper company in Paris and failed, but it was at this time that he met Capa and David Seymour, which led to the founding of the international photo agency Magnum Photos (1947).
