Kuriyama Taizen

A samurai from the early Edo period. His name was Toshiaki, and he was originally called Gobei. He was the son of Toshiyasu, a meritorious retainer of the Kuroda clan of Fukuoka Domain in Chikuzen. He was born in Nakatsu, Buzen Province (Oita Prefecture). In 1617, he succeeded his father as chief retainer of the Fukuoka Domain, and was given a fief of 20,000 koku. After the death of the lord of the domain, Kuroda Nagamasa, he assisted the second lord, Tadayuki, as per his will, but he gradually came into conflict with Tadayuki, who he believed lacked the qualities to be a lord, and was persecuted. In 1632, he sued the shogunate for plotting a rebellion, but the following year the shogunate ruled directly that there was no suspicion, and the Kuroda clan was assured of their original territory, and Daizen was entrusted to the Morioka Domain in Mutsu Province (Iwate Prefecture), where he died. This was the so-called Kuroda Disturbance, and was made into a kabuki play titled Otogitan Hakata Shinori (1852).

江戸初期の武士。名は利章,初め五兵衛と称した。筑前福岡藩黒田家草創の功臣利安の子。豊前国中津(大分県)生まれ。元和3(1617)年父の跡を継いで福岡藩家老となり,2万石を領した。藩主黒田長政の死後その遺言で2代藩主忠之を補佐したが,主君としての資質に欠ける忠之と次第に対立し,迫害された。寛永9(1632)年謀反の企てを理由に忠之を幕府に訴え出たが,翌年幕府は将軍直々の裁決でその疑いはないとし,黒田家は本領安堵,大膳は陸奥国盛岡藩(岩手県)に預けられ,その地で没した。これがいわゆる黒田騒動で,『御伽譚博多新織』(1852)として歌舞伎化された。
