…At the command of Louis XIII, he enlarged the Louvre Palace, and realized the Clock Tower (1641), famous for its caryatids (female figures). He also had a close relationship with Cardinal Richelieu, and designed his residence, the Palais Royal (1624-36), and the Sorbonne Chapel (1626-42), which he donated, and built a castle and city for him at Richelieu, southwest of Tours. In particular, the construction of the new town of Richelieu, with its prescribed street layouts, orderly land divisions, and standardized housing designs and sales, was a pioneering example of urban development in a new era. …
