1857‐1939 French philosopher and sociologist. He taught the history of modern philosophy at the University of Paris from 1902 to 1927. In the field of philosophy, he left behind studies of Leibniz, FH Jacobi, and Comte, but later he resonated with the sociological stance of É. Durkheim, and in his work Morals and Folklore (1903) he advocated empirical research into morality and folklore as social facts. This was a turning point that led him to spend the latter half of his life proposing the concept of "mentalité primitive," which contrasts with the rational thinking of Western civilization.
