His given name was Ichi, his pen name was Kankei, he was commonly known as Ichitaro, and his pen names were Neisai, Joutenjosen, Shorou, and Shoan. He was born in Isahaya, Hizen (Isahaya City, Nagasaki Prefecture). He was the eldest son of Noguchi Shoyo, who was a disciple of Kono Tetsuto and skilled in Chinese poetry and prose. In 1871 (Meiji 4), he moved to Tokyo accompanied by his father. He entered the Tetsugakukan (Political Science Museum) and studied poetry under Mori Shuntou and Kainan, father and son, and was known as a genius poet of the poetry company Seisha. He was active in a gorgeous style of poetry influenced by Qing poetry, and in 1903 he founded the magazine "Hyakkaran," which collected and introduced works by poets from all over the country. He was also well versed in waka and haiku, and was a talented man who dabbled in literary commentary, but from middle age onwards he suffered from serious illness.
