...After that, he released a series of controversial works such as "The Seventh Seal" and "Wild Strawberries" (both 1957), "The Virgin Spring" (1960), "Persona" (1966), "The Hour of the Wolf" (1968), and "Rite of the Night" (1969), becoming a "master of art theater." His color work "Cries and Whispers" (1973) became a worldwide hit (distributed in the United States by Roger Corman, known as the master of horror movies), and his "artistic quality" was also recognized as having box office value. The bold eroticism and intense sexual depictions, supported by the "physical performances" of actresses such as Ingrid Thulin and Gunnar Lindblom, who played the sisters in "Silence," as well as Harriet Anderson, Bibi Anderson, and Liv Ullmann, also marked an era. After announcing his retirement in Fanny and Alexander (1983), he made only one TV movie, After the Rehearsal (1984), and has since devoted himself to directing stage productions.
