An annual plant of the Asteraceae family that continues to bloom beautifully for a long period of summer (illustration). There are about 15 species of Zinnia plants distributed mainly in Mexico, but this species has the largest flowers and is said to have been introduced from America before 1862 (Bunkyu 2), where it was called Chokyu-so (Chokyu-so). It is also known as Urashima-so (Urashima-so). The horticultural varieties currently cultivated began with a double-flowered variety that appeared in France in 1856, and were subsequently improved to large-flowered varieties in America, becoming popular as flowers for summer flower beds in countries around the world.

夏の長い間，美しい花を咲かせつづけるキク科の一年草（イラスト）。ヒャクニチソウ(ジニア)属Zinniaの植物は主としてメキシコに約15種が分布するが，本種は最も大輪で，1862年(文久2)以前にアメリカから渡来したといわれ，チョウキュウソウ(長久草)と呼ばれていた。ウラシマソウ(浦島草)の名もある。現在栽培されている園芸品種は，1856年フランスで八重咲きが出たのをはじめとして，アメリカで大輪系に改良が進み，世界各国で夏花壇の花として発達した。
