A strong-smelling deciduous shrub of the Rutaceae family with one genus and one species, growing to a height of 1.5-2m (illustration). It usually grows under trees in mountains and fields. The papery leaves are simple, irregularly alternate with two on each side (known as a phyllotaxy), obovate or oblong, 5-12cm long, hairless, pointed at the tip, broadly wedge-shaped at the base, and usually without sawtooth edges. Dioecious, yellow-green flowers grow in the leaf axils in April. Male flowers grow in racemes 2-4cm long. The flowers are tetrameric, about 6mm in diameter, and have bright spots on the petals.
