…It is not clear when the first tracheotomy was performed, but there is a legend that Alexander the Great performed it with a sword, and there are also records from the Greek era that say that ancient people had already performed it. However, the first clearly recorded case is said to be in 1826, when Pierre Bretonneau (1778-1862) of France performed it for a 5-year-old girl with airway obstruction (blockage of the airway) caused by diphtheria. Thus, tracheotomy was first performed for airway stenosis, but now, as mentioned above, it is performed for a wide range of purposes because the operation reduces resistance to breathing, makes it easier to remove secretions, and allows for breathing regulation. …
