It is part of the northeastern Indian Ocean and has an area of 798,000 ^km2 . It borders the Ayeyarwady Delta of Myanmar (formerly Burma) to the north, the Malay Peninsula to the east, the Andaman Islands and Nicobar Islands to the west, and Sumatra and the Straits of Malacca to the south. Its name comes from the Andaman Islands. It is 1,200 km long and 640 km wide from north to south. Less than 5% of the ocean floor is deeper than 3,000 m. The submarine canyon system on the eastern side of the Andaman-Nicobar Ridge is more than 4,300 m deep. Trade ships have been traveling through the Andaman Sea since ancient times, and from around the 8th century, trade became active between India and Ceylon in the west and the former Burmese ports of Thaton, Martaban (Mouttama), and Taboi (Dawei) in the east. Like Yangon (formerly Rangoon), the ports of Pathein, Mawlamyine, Dawei and Beit are of vital importance to Myanmar for maritime traffic with other countries.
