Miyagi [Village] - Miyagi

Japanese: 宮城[村] - みやぎ

A village in Seta County, central Gunma Prefecture. Population 8,361 (1995). Located on the southern slope of Mount Akagi, the Kasu River runs along the eastern border, the Arato River runs through the center, and the Oana River runs south through the west. Many of the houses are surrounded by windbreaks to protect against the strong winds that are unique to this region. Because the soil is poor, mulberry fields were larger than rice paddies, but the Gunma Irrigation System was completed in 1969, and land reclamation and field improvement have been carried out. Livestock farming is the main agricultural activity, and shiitake mushrooms are also cultivated. Akagi Onsen (a gypsum-containing saltwater spring, 44°C) and Chuji Onsen (iron carbonate spring, 25°C) are located upstream of the Arato River, making it a base for climbing Mount Akagi.

群馬県中央部，勢多郡の村。人口8361(1995)。赤城山南斜面にあり，東境を粕川，中部を荒砥（あらと）川，西部を大穴川が南流する。この地方特有の空っ風に備えた防風林に囲まれる民家が多い。地味が悪いため水田よりも桑園が広かったが，1969年群馬用水が完成し，開田や圃場整備が行われている。畜産が農業の中心で，シイタケも栽培されている。荒砥川上流に赤城温泉(含ボウ硝セッコウ泉，44℃)，忠治温泉(炭酸鉄泉，25℃)があり，赤城登山の基地となっている。
