play

Japanese: play
play

...Spectacle (hereafter, as used in the following) expresses the most fundamental characteristic of theater as something to be shown. The English word play or the French word jeu emphasizes the playfulness of what happens on stage and the fictional nature that results from it, while the English word performance refers to the special physical skills required for such a performance and their results. In Japanese, the word theatron, or the word for theatrical arts along with the spectator seating, is 'play'.

From the play:

[Literature and Drama]
The concept of "drama" is unique to modern Japanese, and at least in the West, this concept does not exist. Drama, of course, refers to the theater itself, and the English word "play" also means a play that is read, and at the same time, a play that is performed on stage. The German word "Theaterstück" and the French word "pièce de théâtre" both literally mean "theatrical work," and are also used to mean drama as literature.
