A city on the west shore of Lake Hamana, in the southwestern tip of Shizuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1972. Washizu, in the center, was the birthplace of Sakichi Toyoda, and cotton weaving industries developed there after the Meiji period. Currently, large factories for automobile parts and electrical appliances have moved in, accounting for approximately 98% of the city's manufacturing shipment value of 1,246.6 billion yen (6th in the prefecture in 2003). The Tokaido Main Line and Tenryu Hamanako Railway run through the city, and it is also a tourist base for Lake Hamana. Lake Hamana is blessed with fishery resources such as clams and black porgy, and efforts are also being made in the cultivation of kuruma shrimp and other fisheries. Mandarin oranges are also prolific. In March 2010, Arai Town, Hamana District, was incorporated into the city. 86.56 km2 . 60,107 people (2010). → Shirasuka
