Yamamayu (mountain cocoon) - Yamamayu (English spelling) Antheraea yamamai
A large moth of the Lepidoptera family, Saturniidae, also known as Tensan (heavenly silkworm). Native to Japan, it is distributed throughout the country. Adults are about 35 mm long, with forewings spread about 130 mm, and are grayish-yellow-brown to dark purple-brown in color. They have eye-shaped patterns in the center of the front and back wings. The eggs are flattened and spherical, about 2 mm in diameter, with hard white eggshells, but the appearance is blackish-brown due to the color of the agglutinating substance. The larvae are green, with brown heads up to the second instar, which gradually turn green from the third instar onwards. The body shape is similar to that of the Sakusan, with three pairs of hair tufts on each body segment.
