An earthquake that occurred off the coast of Tokaido on December 23, 1854, and the resulting disaster. The damage was exacerbated by a tsunami that struck the coastal areas from Boso to Tosa. Together with the Ansei Nankai earthquake, which occurred 32 hours later and was of a similar scale, the death toll is said to have reached several thousand.
