This is a Jodo Shinshu Honganji temple located in Honmachi, Chuo-ku, Osaka. It is also called Osaka Betsuin or Tsumura Mido. It is called Kita Mido, whereas Higashi Honganji Namba Betsuin in the same ward is called Minami Mido. In 1496 (Meio 5), Rennyo, the 8th abbot of Honganji, built Ishiyama Gobo (Osaka Gobo, under Ishiyama Honganji) on the grounds of Tamatsukuri Kishi (also called Ishiyama), i.e. Osaka Castle. After the Ishiyama War, Kennyo was ordered by the emperor to move to Sagi no Mori in Kishu (Wakayama Prefecture) in 1580 (Tensho 8), but 5 years later he returned to Rogishi in Osaka via Kaizuka in Senshu (Osaka Prefecture). It was then moved to Tenma under the patronage of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, but during construction the head temple was moved to Rokujo Horikawa in Kyoto (now Nishi Hongan-ji Temple), so followers from Osaka ran the temple. In 1597 (Keicho 2), Junnyo moved it to its current location and it came under the control of Nishi Hongan-ji Temple. During the Osaka War, it fell into disrepair as it was the camp of Hachisuka Awa no Kami, but was rebuilt by Jakunyo in 1692 (Genroku 5).
