The story of Münchhausen - The story of Münchhausen

The Tales of Baron Munchausen, also known as The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, are a collection of tall tales by Baron Munchausen (1720-97), a real 18th-century German man who loved travel and hunting, and was so adventurous that he served in the Turkish War twice. In these stories, the protagonist tells his friends tales of his travels and hunting adventures, as well as tall tales. The first to compile these 17 humorous folk tales (1781) as The Tales of Baron Munchausen and to publish an English translation (first edition 1785) was the German librarian Raspe, who fled to England. When Bürger translated the second edition of this English book into German, adding 13 more stories, and wrote The Wonderful Voyages, Expeditions, and Merry Adventures of Baron Munchausen, Overland and Sea (1786), this work, which depicts a world that cannot be resolved by the spirit of scientific rationalism with a witty and humorous method, is counted among the classic masterpieces of the genre of false stories as a highly artistic folk book. In the 19th and 20th centuries, there was no end to the adaptations and imitations of The Tales of Munchausen, such as Immermann's historical satire (1838), Hansel's drama (1933), and Erich Kästner's film script (1943).
