1890‐1970 French soldier and politician. Born into a minor aristocratic family in Lille. After graduating from the Saint-Cyr Military Academy in 1912, he began his military career. He was seriously wounded in World War I and taken prisoner by the German army, but returned to Poland at the end of the war and served in the Polish army, which was at war with the Russian revolutionary government at the time. In 1921 he taught military history at the Saint-Cyr Military Academy, and entered the Army School the following year. In 1925 he joined Marshal Pétain's office, and while he continued his military career, he also studied military theory, and presented his own unique views on the importance of mobile warfare using mechanized units, in contrast to the French Army's tendency at the time to place emphasis on defensive warfare relying on artillery lines.
