...Its foundations were established by J. V. Poncelet, who discovered that anharmonic ratios are projective properties and that duality in projective geometry is also found in them. Following this, J. Steiner (1796-1863) showed that quadratic curves and surfaces can also be treated projectively, AF Möbius and J. Plücker introduced coordinates and established projective geometry as analytic geometry, and K. G. von Staudt (1798-1867) established it as synthetic geometry based on Desargues' theorem.

Of the five postulates given by Euclid, the fifth states that "if one line intersects two lines and the sum of the angles on the same side is less than two right angles, then the two lines, when extended infinitely, will intersect on that side."
