Liu Yao (English spelling)
[raw]?
[Died] Kenpei 4 (333)
The fifth emperor of the Han (→ Former Zhao) state of the Five Barbarians and Sixteen Kingdoms in China (reigned 318-328). His courtesy name was Yongming. He was a relative of Liu Yuan. He was favored by Liu Yuan and Liu Song, and captured Luoyang in the Jin state and defeated Emperor Min of Chang'an. He then based himself in Chang'an, but after Liu Song's death, he became emperor in the first year of the Guangchu period (318), and in the second year of the same year, he changed the state's name from Han to Zhao. This state is called Former Zhao. Shi Le, who was formerly under the control of the Liu clan, became independent and increased his power in the east, and as a result of a battle between the two, Liu Yao was defeated, captured, and eventually killed.
