Law of Octaves

An empirical law regarding the regularity of the properties of elements. It was discovered in 1865 by Newlands in England. When the approximately 60 elements known at the time were arranged in order of atomic weight, an element with similar properties would appear repeatedly every eighth element, and it was so named because it resembles a musical scale. It is a particularly important stage in the history of the discovery of the periodic law. When it was first announced, it was not recognized at all in England, but after the publication of the periodic tables by Mayer in Germany and Mendeleev in Russia, its significance was recognized and it came to be highly valued.

元素の性質の規則性に関する経験則。1865年イギリスのニューランズによってみいだされた。当時知られていた約60の元素を原子量の順に並べていくと、8番目ごとに性質のよく似た元素が繰り返し出現するという法則で、音階とよく似ているということから、このような名称でよばれた。周期律発見の歴史のなかでもとくに重要な一段階である。初め発表されたときはイギリスでまったく認められなかったが、ドイツのマイヤー、ロシアのメンデレーエフの周期表が発表されてから、その意義が認められ、高く評価されるようになった。
