A lacquer craftsman from the early Meiji period. Born in Edo Nihonbashi as the son of metal fittings maker Tadazo. His real name was Shigejiro. In Bunkyu 2 (1862), he learned lacquer work from Nakayama Komin and painting from Ikeda Koson. In 1870 (1876), he set up his own business in Umamichicho, Asakusa, and in 1876, he used his own money to visit the Philadelphia World's Fair. He excelled in replicating antiques, and was ordered by the Museum Bureau to make replicas of the furnishings of the Shosoin Repository and Horyuji Temple, and was also commissioned by various families. In 1877, he won the Ryumon Prize at the 1st Domestic Industrial Exposition, and the following year, he visited the furnishings of the Shosoin Repository and devoted himself to researching ancient lacquerware, winning the Myogi Prize at the 2nd and 3rd Domestic Industrial Expositions. In 1890, he became the first professor of lacquer work at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (Tokyo University of the Arts). 明治前期の漆工。江戸日本橋に金具師忠蔵の子として生まれる。本名は繁次郎。文久2(1862)年に中山胡民に蒔絵を学び,絵を池田孤村に学ぶ。明治3(1870)年浅草馬道町に独立し,9年私財を投じてフィラデルフィア万国博覧会を視察した。古器の模造に長じ,博物局より正倉院,法隆寺の什物の模造を命ぜられ,また諸家の嘱託を受ける。10年第1回内国勧業博・竜紋賞,翌11年正倉院什物を拝観し古代漆器の研究に努め,第2・3回内国勧業博・妙技賞を受賞。23年東京美術学校(東京芸大)の初代漆工科教授。東京の谷中墓地に葬られる。<参考文献>『近代日本の漆工芸』
