A city in northeastern Greece that was founded during the ancient Macedonian Kingdom. Its ancient Greek name was Philippi. Today it is called Philippi and is part of the city of Kavala. In 356 BC, Philip II of Macedonia built a fortress here to control the nearby gold mines, and it was named after him. It was inhabited by Thracians from ancient times, and the Via Egnatia passed through it. In 42 BC, Marcus Antony and Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus (→ Augustus) defeated Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus here (→ Battle of Philippi), and made it a Roman colony (colonia), which flourished until the Middle Ages. In the mid-1st century, Paul visited the city on his second and third missionary journeys to spread Christianity in Europe. The New Testament's Epistle to the Philippians was addressed to the residents of this city. In 2016, the city ruins, including the city walls, theater, and early Christian basilica, which all show strong influences of Hellenistic culture, were registered as a World Heritage Site.
