Bauxite mine in the northeastern tip of the Northern Territory, Australia. The city and airport are called Nhulunbuy (population 3695, 1996). Reserves are approximately 250 million tons. Mining began in 1972. There is also an alumina refinery, and bauxite and alumina are exported. Royalties (mine usage fees) are returned to the indigenous people.
