An old town in Ito District, northeastern Wakayama Prefecture. The main settlement is on the right bank of the Kinokawa River and prospered as the trailhead for Mt. Koya. It fell into decline for a time as it was off the Nankai Electric Railway Koya Line, but has developed again since the opening of the Koya-Ryujin Skyline. It is also on the Wakayama Line. The spinning industry is thriving here, producing seal fabrics, pile fabrics, and knitted fabrics. Incorporated into Hashimoto City in March 2006. 20.06 km2 . Population: 15,418 (2003). 和歌山県北東部,伊都(いと)郡の旧町。主集落は紀ノ川右岸にあり高野山登山口集落として繁栄,南海電鉄高野線からはずれ一時衰微したが,高野竜神スカイラインの開通により再び発展。和歌山線が通じる。紡績業が盛んで,シール織物,パイル織物,メリヤスなどを産する。2006年3月橋本市へ編入。20.06km2。1万5418人(2003)。
