A city in central Angola. It is located on a plateau at an altitude of about 1,800 meters, and grains, vegetables, and fruits are grown in the surrounding area. It is connected to Lobito on the Atlantic coast by rail. It was founded by Portugal in 1912. In 1928, it was renamed Nova Lisboa, meaning "New Lisbon," but it was reinstated to its former name when Angola gained independence in 1975. It has a population of 1,687,000 (1995).
