In 1876 (Meiji 9), a group of Protestant students at Sapporo Agricultural College converted to Christianity under the guidance of American agricultural scientist and educator Clark, who came to Japan at the invitation of Kuroda Kiyotaka, Commissioner of the Hokkaido Colonization Commission. When Clark left Japan, they signed the "Christian Pledge" (1877) and pledged their faith for the rest of their lives, and Clark famously encouraged them by saying, "Young people, have great ambitions!" The first class of students at the agricultural college included 15 students, including Sato Shosuke and Oshima Masatake, and the second class included 18 students, including Uchimura Kanzo, Nitobe Inazo, Miyabe Kingo, and Hiroi Isamu. Many prominent figures who would go on to lead Christian, academic, and political circles emerged from this group.
