Casino (English spelling) casino

Casino (English spelling) casino
An entertainment facility where gambling is the main activity. Originally meaning a small house or club in Italian. Originating as a meeting place for music and dance, it became a place for games and gambling in the late 19th century. The most well-known classic example is the casino in Monte Carlo, Monaco, which opened in 1863. Casinos were once restricted in many countries due to the harmful effects of gambling, but in the late 20th century, they were legalized in many European countries, and in the UK, casinos began operating in 1960, mainly in London. In France, casinos were legalized in 1933, and casinos in Cannes, Nice, and Deauville are famous. Casinos are also known in Estoril in Portugal, Corfu in Greece, Baden-Baden and Bad Homburg-Vorderhohe in Germany. In the United States, casinos were permitted to operate in the state of Nevada in 1931. The economy of Las Vegas depends on casinos, and gambling accounts for 40% of Nevada's tax revenue. Since the 1970s, casinos have expanded to other states under conditions such as designated settlements and riverboats. In Asia, the casinos in the Macau Special Administrative Region of China are famous. Today, there are about 3,000 casinos operating legally around the world. As of 2016, they are prohibited in Japan. In today's casinos, customers generally bet money against a bookmaker called the banker or house. The odds of winning are mathematically calculated in great detail, and it is rare for the casino to incur a loss even on a daily basis. Typical games include baccarat, craps, blackjack, roulette, slot machines, and poker, and in East Asia, Dai-Sho, Fan-Tan, and Pai-Gow are also played. In 1995, the first online casino opened. At the beginning of the 21st century, about 200 online casinos were operating, and the amount of bets per year was said to have reached $25 billion. Many of the online casinos are based in tax havens, and the lack of control by regulatory authorities has been criticized.
