Arlberg Tunnel - Arlberg Tunnel (English spelling)

This is a railway tunnel on the Austrian State Railway between St. Anton and Langen. It passes under the Arlberg Pass, which is the watershed between the Danube and Rhine river basins. It is 10,648 meters long. Construction began in 1880 and it opened in 1884. At the time it was steam-operated, but electrification was completed in 1925, connecting the states of Tyrol and Vorarlberg by rail. It is one of the longest tunnels in Europe, and is also famous as a high-altitude tunnel, with the highest point inside the tunnel being 1,311 meters above sea level.

Construction of a road tunnel under the Arlberg Pass began in 1974 and was opened in 1978. The road width is 7.5 meters (two lanes, two-way traffic system) and the length is 13,972 meters.
