〘名〙① 獅子の頭。(イ) 獅子舞に用いる、木製の獅子の頭。獅子。※大観本謡曲・望月(1586頃)「折こそよしとて脱ぎ置く獅子頭、又は八撥(やつばち)を、打てや打てと」(ロ) 神社で、狛犬(こまいぬ)と対にして置かれている獅子の頭。※俳諧・曠野(1689)八「古宮や雪しるかかる獅子頭〈釣雪〉」② =ししまい(獅子舞)《季・新年》※増鏡(1368‐76頃)一一「舞楽、田楽、ししがしら、流鏑馬(やぶさめ)など、さまざま所にしつけたる事どもおもしろし」③ 「ししがしら(獅子頭)の兜」の略。※浄瑠璃・仮名手本忠臣蔵(1748)一「名にしおふ、鎌倉山の星兜、とっぱい頭(がしら)しし頭」④ 大棟の両端にある鬼板・獅子口をいう。獅子置(ししおき)。※匠明(1608‐10)門記集「獅子頭成は柱と同し。上は弐分高配に〆、幅は成のべにすへし。下は弐分はちかりにすへし。上かど棟ともゑ三つ〆、中にたすき弐つ。脇にもすへし」⑤ 金魚の頭部にできた肉質のこぶの称。獅子の面をつけたようにみえる。主にランチュウにみられるので、ランチュウそのものの異名ともなる。また、ランチュウ以外でもこのようなこぶの生ずる品種があり、オランダシシガシラ、アズマニシキなどはその例。※さい果て(1964‐71)〈津村節子〉四「蘭鋳の稚魚は〈略〉もし色づいてきて獅子がしらとよばれる肉瘤が盛り上ってくるようになったら」⑥ シダ類ウラボシ科の常緑多年草。各地の山地の林の下などに生える。葉は多数叢生し、二型葉で栄養葉と胞子葉からなる。若葉は淡紅色を帯び、その基部には褐色の線形の鱗片が密生する。栄養葉は長さ三〇~四〇センチメートル、幅四~六センチメートルの倒披針形で、多数の線形の羽片に分かれる一回羽状複葉。胞子葉は柄が長く直立し、羽片は栄養葉より小さく、ややまばらにつき、裏面に胞子嚢群を生じる。むかでぐさ。やぶそてつ。いわしぼね。おさば。〔日本植物名彙(1884)〕⑦ ツバキの園芸品種。花は八重咲きで、小~中輪。花色は桃色、葉は小形でやや薄い。樹勢は弱く切花用に使われる。⑧ 郷土玩具の一つ。獅子舞に用いる獅子頭を小さく作ったもの。
