Abdel Krim

Japanese: アブデル・クリム - あぶでるくりむ
Abdel Krim

A leader of the Moroccan independence movement. Born the son of a chief of the Beni Ouraghri people in the Rif region. He served as a judge in Spanish Morocco during World War I. From 1921 to May 1926, he waged an armed struggle against Spain in the Rif region (the Rif War), and declared the establishment of the "Islamic Republic". During this time, he liberated the Spanish-occupied territories except for the area around Tangier, but in 1925 the French army entered the war, and Krim unconditionally surrendered to the French army in May 1926 and was exiled to Reunion Island. In 1947, he fled to Egypt, but even after Morocco gained independence (March 1956), he remained in Egypt, criticizing the independent Moroccan monarchy and refusing to return to his homeland, until his death there. His book is Mémoires (1927).
