Adolescent crisis

Japanese: 思春期危機 - ししゅんききき（英語表記）adolescent crisis

A psychiatric term referring to a mental crisis during adolescence. It is also called the adolescent crisis. Adolescence is a time of major physical and physiological changes, such as the appearance of secondary sexual characteristics, which alone can lead to mental instability. There is also instability in being recognized as an immature being who cannot be accepted into the adult world, even if one is physiologically mature. Furthermore, adolescence is a time when one seeks independence from the dependent existence that one has had up until now, and questions the meaning of the self, which can lead to mental instability.

思春期における精神的な危機的状態をさす精神医学用語。青春期危機ともいう。思春期は二次性徴の出現という身体的･生理学的に大きな変化が生じてくる時期であって，それのみでも精神的に不安定となる要因をはらんでいる。また，生理学的には成熟していても，なお大人の仲間入りを認められない未熟な存在としか認められない不安定さもある。さらに，思春期とはこれまでの依存的な存在から自立を志向し，自己とは何かを問う時期でもあり，それが精神的不安定を招く。
