<br /> A shell mound in Kabira, Ishigaki City, Okinawa Prefecture. It is located on a low, independent hill in the center of the peninsula that juts out north, separating Kabira Bay and Sakieda Bay, northwest of Ishigaki Island. It was the first ruins discovered in the Yaeyama Islands, and is considered an important ruin for understanding the Yaeyama of the 15th and 16th centuries, which is different from the culture of the Okinawa Islands, and was designated a national historic site in 1972 (Showa 47). Relics discovered from the middle of the mountain to the flat area at the top include pottery, celadon, stone axes, concave stones, stone pestles, stone plates, shell plates and shells, and mammal and fish bones. Yaeyama pottery is clearly different from that of Okinawa Island, which belongs to the Jomon culture, and is named "outer ear pottery" due to its characteristic of having horizontal handles, which is considered an important characteristic of Yaeyama pottery. The ruins are estimated to date back to the 15th or 16th century, based on the fact that Chinese celadon was excavated there, and it is believed that Yaeyama had its own unique regional culture, unlike the Okinawa Islands. Take the Azuma Bus from Ishigaki City to Kabira, and walk for about 10 minutes. Source: Kodansha National Historic Site Guide Information |
