An old town in Yatsuka County in eastern Shimane Prefecture. Facing Lake Nakaumi, the San'in Main Line runs through it. It has been open since ancient times, and remnants of the jori system remain. The main settlement, Iya, developed as a highway town on the San'in Road. Agricultural equipment and kamaboko (fish cake) manufacturing is thriving here. Rice, oysters, and cabbage are also produced here. It is within commuting distance of both Yonago and Matsue, and residential development is progressing. In 2005, Lake Nakaumi was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland. In August 2011, it was incorporated into Matsue City. 42.64 km2 . Population: 14,351 (2010). 島根県東部,八束(やつか)郡の旧町。中海(なかうみ)に面し,山陰本線が通じる。古くから開け,条里制の遺構が残る。主集落の揖屋(いや)は山陰道の街道町として発達。農機具,かまぼこ製造が盛ん。米,カキ,キャベツなども産する。米子(よなご)と松江両市の通勤圏となり,宅地化が進む。2005年に中海がラムサール条約登録湿地となる。2011年8月松江市へ編入。42.64km2。1万4351人(2010)。
