Heller, Joseph

Japanese: ヘラー(英語表記)Heller, Joseph
Heller, Joseph
Born: May 1, 1923, Brooklyn, New York, USA
[Died] December 12, 1999. East Hampton, New York, U.S.A. American Jewish novelist. Participated in 60 bombing missions during World War II, and studied at Columbia University Graduate School after the war. Written as a copywriter, Catch-22 (1961) is a masterpiece of black humor that turns the story of a bombing squadron based on a small island in the Mediterranean into a comedy. It is not merely a criticism of war, but a fierce indictment of all bureaucratic systems that stifle humanity. His long-awaited second novel Something Happened (74) is a psychoanalytic confession of a middle-aged trading company worker. His other works include God Knows (84) and the play We Bombed in New Haven (1968).
