...Some instruments can play as low as B. Other related instruments include the piccolo, which is an octave higher, the alto flute, which is a fourth lower, and the bass flute, which is an octave lower. The history of this type of instrument is very old, having been introduced to Europe in the 12th and 13th centuries, and by the time of the Renaissance they were used as ensemble instruments, either alone or in accompaniment to other instruments or vocals.
