Between the 3rd and 5th centuries BC and AD, Rome used its superior architectural and civil engineering techniques to build numerous temples, theaters, triumphal arches, aqueducts, bridges, baths, and other structures throughout Spain, the largest province of the empire, some of which still stand today. Although architectural heritage from the following Visigothic period (5th to 7th centuries) was destroyed by Muslims and few remain, the oldest surviving church in Spain, San Juan de los Baños (661), displays a unique architectural style that combines Roman and Byzantine influences and is characterized by horseshoe arches and geometric decorative motifs. The Muslim invasion of the peninsula gave birth to two unique styles, the Asturian and Mozarabic, in the northern Christian region from the 8th to 10th centuries. …
