Pacific jack mackerel

Japanese: カイワリ - かいわり
Pacific jack mackerel

A marine fish belonging to the order Perciformes and family Carangidae of the class Osteichthyes. It is widely distributed on the Pacific coast from Mt. Kinka, and on the Sea of Japan coast from various parts of Japan south of the Noto Peninsula to the Ryukyu Islands, Taiwan, the waters of Java, and the waters of South Africa. It can reach a total length of 40 cm, but most are around 20 cm. The body is tall and significantly laterally compressed. There are two free spines in front of the anal fin. The lateral line is strongly curved, but runs straight from below the 15th and 16th soft rays of the second dorsal fin to the rear. The ridge scales are relatively small and develop along the entire length of the straight part of the lateral line. The teeth on both the upper and lower jaws are villous. The main external feature is a wide black-brown vertical band on the second dorsal fin and anal fin. Juveniles have six black horizontal stripes on their sides, but as they grow, these become less clear. This bottom-dwelling fish is often caught with bottom trawls. In the Bungo Channel and Hyuga Nada Sea areas, the spawning season is from September to November, when they lay pelagic eggs. The meat is delicious, and can be eaten as sashimi or teriyaki.
