A British left-wing book club. Founded in May 1936 with the aim of providing a cultural and popular base for the Popular Front. V. Gollancz, EJ Strachey, and HJ Laski served as judges, and the club distributed monthly books dealing with fascism, war, and poverty, and published an organ called Left News. At its peak, the club had 57,000 members and 1,500 discussion groups. It was not supported by the Labour Party, and after the German-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact, its leadership split over its relationship with the Communist Party, and it was dissolved in October 1948.
