...There are two theories about the origin of these animal designs (animal styles): the Oriental origin theory and the Eastern (Siberian) origin theory. Traditionally, the Oriental origin theory was prevalent, which said that animal designs were introduced from ancient Oriental art by Scythian expeditions to the Orient. However, there is a movement to reevaluate the Eastern origin theory, due to the recent discovery of an animal design decorative panel from the 8th to 7th century BC in the frozen tomb of Arjan in Tuba, southern Siberia. Scythian animal designs are widely distributed throughout northern Eurasia, as can be seen in the remains of the Pazyryk burial mounds in Altai, and the tradition was passed down to the Sarmatian culture.
