Ogasawara air mass

Japanese:
Ogasawara air mass

A tropical maritime air mass that appears in the subtropical high pressure zone of the northwest Pacific Ocean. Until the early Showa period, the weather charts created by the Central Meteorological Observatory had the Ogasawara Islands on the eastern edge, so this name was given to it. It does not mean that this air mass appears near the Ogasawara Islands. It moves north in the summer, bringing stable, humid, clear summer weather to areas around Japan. It is hot and humid near the surface, but the upper layer is dry due to subsidence air currents. When a typhoon or other event moves north, an even more humid equatorial air mass may move north along the west side of this air mass, which can have a major impact, such as causing heavy rainfall at the end of the rainy season.
