Uonogawa River

Japanese: 魚野川 - うおのがわ
Uonogawa River

This river originates from Mt. Tanigawa, which is located in the southern part of Niigata Prefecture and borders Gunma Prefecture, and flows through the Muikamachi Basin before joining the Shinano River in the northwest of the Kawaguchi district of Nagaoka City. It is 69.5 km long. The left bank is located at the eastern foot of the tilted land mass of the Uonuma Hills, and is characterized by terraced landforms, while the right bank is characterized by a prominent alluvial fan topography, as it joins tributaries such as the Nobori River, the Mikuni River, the Mizunashi River, the Sanashi River, and the Aburuma River, which flow from the Echigo Sanzan mountains. The Joetsu Shinkansen, JR Joetsu Line, the Kan'etsu Expressway, and National Route 17 run along the coast, making it a key transportation hub with the Tokyo metropolitan area, and in the early modern period, the Muikamachi Funadou was also a popular shipping route.
