Japanese: カサモチ（英語表記）Nothosmyrnium japonicum Miq.

A perennial plant of the Apiaceae family (illustration) thought to have been introduced from China long ago. It has escaped into the Kinki and Kanto regions and has become naturalized in some areas. The stem is about 1m tall and branches out somewhat at the top. The leaves are alternate, petioled and bipinnately compound, with ovate pinnae and sawtoothed edges, and the stems are covered with fine hairs. From August to October, compound umbels are produced at the ends of the branches and produce many small flowers. The flowers have five petals, the tips of which are curled inwards and white, and the calyx is not developed. The petals of the flowers around the inflorescence tend to be slightly larger.

古く中国から渡来したと考えられるセリ科の多年草（イラスト）。近畿や関東で逸出し野生化しているところもある。茎は高さ1m内外，上部で多少，枝を分かつ。葉は互生し，葉柄があって2回羽状複葉となり，羽片は卵形，縁には鋸歯があり，茎とともに細毛がある。8～10月ごろ，枝先に複散形花序を作って小さい花を多数つける。花弁は5枚，先は内に巻き白色，萼は発達しない。花序の周辺の花では花弁が少し大きくなる傾向がある。
