Chavannes, Édouard
Born: October 5, 1865, Lyon
Died January 29, 1918. A French sinologist from Paris. In 1889 he went to Beijing as a member of the Chinese embassy, ​​and in 1893 became a professor at the Collège de France. He studied ancient Chinese history, the history of the Western Regions, the history of Buddhism, and epigraphy, and published many detailed translations and annotations of historical materials and excellent research results. He became a member of the French Academy in 1903 and an honorary member of the Royal Asiatic Society in 1916, and also edited the journal "Notice." He became a leading European orientalist in both name and reality. His works include "Records of the History of Sima Qian" (Mémoires historiques de Se-ma Ts'ien) (1905), "Records of a Visit to Ancient China" (Mion archéologique dans la Chine septentrionale) (09), and "Cinq cents contes et apologues extraits du Tripiṭaka chinois" (11).
